functional review regarding Mongoose mountain bikes

____Prefix:____I have read a lot of negative reviews with mongoose and other brands. most of these reviews are new to the biking community or don't know what to expect. they are also complaining more about shipping or assembly/tuning than the actual ride. When purchasing a bike there has to be certain expectations set on quality. In this price range ($199 $399), is the bottom of the barrel. These department store bikes are mass produced and while can offer some level of components like an aluminum frame, disc brakes full suspension, it is done inexpensively. If you are needing/wanting a cycle of high quality and will last a long time with minimal issues set your budget starting at $500 and deal only with pro cycle shops. If you are expecting a $500 or $1000 bike for $250 you will be sadly and greatly disappointed. In this price point ($250-ish), you get many steel, plastic and subpar components. With my many issues with assembly, shipping and cheap parts, i still feel mongoose (Pacific Cycle), makes a decent product and i still feel its value is higher than the dollar i paid. Mongoose still offers at this level the opportunity to customize and upgrade to suite your budget and lifestyleI just purchased 4 mongoose cycles this month (May 2013) from Amazon. When my wife and I are ready to invest in the cycling sport (make sure we like it), we will move onto Trek's and set our budget accordingly. Until then we are very satisfied with these department store level mongoose cycles.____I purchased 2 each of the two different mongoose bikes below.Mongoose Men's XR250 Bicycle (Grey) 26-Inch (18" frame) for 249$ from Amazon 5/9/13Mongoose Pro Wing Comp Dual Suspension Mountain Bike (16" frame) for 226$ from Amazon 5/16/13The Status 2.4 bike is virtually the same in features and price, (see my uploaded photo), so this review can apply not only to this cycle but to mongoose and Pacific Cycle (the owner of Mongoose) in general. So here is my story. My wife and i decided to start cycling again to get in shape. We didnt want to invest thousands in bikes and equipment (yet), but didnt want $99 walmart specials either. I purchased 2 of the mongoose XR250 on 5/9/13 from amazon but now not available. I never thought the XR250 would be too big for my wife. I learned a lot since then. My review on the XR250 applies to the Status 2.4 and Pro Wing Comp too because 1, they are extremely similar and 2 it is a general review for all mongoose. The Mongoose Pro Wing Comp bike has a 16" frame (small) which is key to having it fit my wife. The most important message I can offer is make sure you are buying a cycle that fits your body. See my size guide below. Riding a cycle that is too big can be dangerous and one that is too small can add unnecessary fatigue.I posted a photo of the Mongoose XR250 under customer pics on this page. You can see the bikes are very similar, the main difference is the XR250 has a 18" frame while the Pro Wing Comp has a 16" frame. Other minor technical differences but not much.____I give these cycles 5 stars but read what I went thru.Out of the box: The short version, a mess. The long version:ASSEMBLY:1: handlebars2: front tire3: seat4: pedals5: inflate tiresTOOLS:1: Allen wrench multi2: Philips screw driver3: Pliers4: Pump with Schrader head ADJUSTMENTS:1: Brakes2: derailleur3: rear shockWEIGHT:41 pounds before adding accessories, (37 pounds for the Pro Wing Comp). Its a beast! After i added a few things like seat saddle, bottle and holder, pump, etc it tipped the scale at 44lbs. The front tire while having a double wall aluminum rim, is still 6.4lbs! This cycle will never beat any land speed records or make an assent with grace. But it will build muscle maneuvering it around the trails that's for sure. You get a work out loading and unloading from the bike rack too. If commuting or paved trails is your thing this will be fine.SIZE:This is very important when finding a bicycle that will fit you. Riding a bicycle that is too big can be dangerous and one that is too small can add unnecessary fatigue. Don't confuse tire size with frame size. A 26" tire size is the most common and most practical for the majority. 24" tire size is not recommended for adults because it will decrease ride comfort and also be hard to find parts such as wheels, tire and tubes. There is also 29 inch tire size referred as 29'er. 29'er are better suited if you are doing some serious rock riding. Frame size is the most important and is not standardized but mostly references as small, medium, large and extra large. when measuring a bike to fit you, your inseam is the most important measurement not your height. The XR250 has a frame of 18" (medium). I am 6 foot with a 32" inseam and this barely fit me. my wife is 5'3" with a 30" inseam and it did not fit her at all. Here is how it breaks down but again each manufacturer is slightly different.Small= 28-30' inseam (14" to 16" frame)Medium= 31-32' inseam (17" to 18" frame)Large= 33-34 inseam (19" frame)X-large= 35"-up inseam (21" frame)OWNERS MANUAL:Don't depend on the owners manual for any help. If you don't have any experience with bike assembly i would strongly recommend a bike shop to assemble and tune it for you. The manual covers every bike mongoose sells for departments stores. it is extremely vague and non detailed. online google search or you tube videos will be more helpful honestly.UNPACKING:They are shipped double boxed. The manufacturer box within a shipping box. This is good but the problem is the packaging. The bikes had pieces loose in the box. They zip tie everything together and use thin corrugated cardboard to protect but when things break apart pieces get scratched and broken. The front tire is zip tied to frame, the handlebars are hanging by the cables just floating. the seat and post not secured. I don't blame the shipping company but Pacific Cycle-the maker of Mongoose for packing.BIKE 1 PROBLEMS (XR250):One of the nuts that is pressed into the stem came out. As a result i could not clamp down the handle bars. This by itself is not a problem, a new stem from Pacific Cycle or upgrade and buy a better stem myself, but this was not all. The cable for the front caliper was crimped in the top of the fork right where the Race bearing sits and as a result the Race bearing was crushed along with the cable for the brake rendering both useless. The left fork had a huge gouge I suspect from manufacturing not shipping. Both tires would not hold air. This bike was beyond simple adjustments or repairs and needed to be returned.BIKE 2 PROBLEMS (XR250):Bent spokes on front wheel due to improper packing, puncture in seat and broken reflector front and back. Took wheel to bike shop for straitening, ($15). New seat on way from Pacific Cycle and reflectors don't care about as we won't be sharing the road with cars, (trail riding only).BIKE 3 (XR250):This is the replacement for bike 1. Received just two days after filing a return with amazon (return filed on May 9, received May 11, 2013). Box was delivered destroyed. Both the outer box and inner Mongoose box where falling apart at the seams had several crushed areas and punched holes. Despite the decrepit state of the boxes the bike was surprisingly in good shape. Other than assembly and tuning nothing else had to be done, dont figure.BIKE 4 (Pro Wing Comp):Other than assembly and tuning this bike faired okay. Broken reflectors and lose parts. Some scratches on the frame but for myself i dont care as the decals get removed and ill probably strip the paint for the polished aluminum look.BIKE 5 (Pro Wing Comp):Had to replace a tube as the back tire would not hold air, ( broken valve stem). Again both front rear brake and derailleur needed adjustment-normal stuff. The issues I encountered I contribute to poor manufacturing and packing on Pacific Cycles part and doesn't really degrade the actual quality and value of the Bicycle. Also because Amazon has such good customer service, I had a replacement bike in two days and free return shipping with UPS auto pickup on the damaged one. I would never buy something like this over the internet without this kind of support from a retailer.A couple notes; there is no place to mount a water bottle. I purchased an adapter for the handle bar. There is no place for a pump, I purchased a CO2 pump and store it in the under-seat bag I bought. When I get these bikes up and working with some miles on them I will update my review.
