Story of the Typhoon, starting at week 1.I'm very pleased. Assembly was easy. The owner's manual was big and detailed. Once I test drove for a few days and made adjustments, I fully enjoyed a silky smooth 28 mile ride.Buying a modern Schwinn was a gamble. I haven't been impressed with low end, mass market bikes. I'm happy I took a chance with a Typhoon. It's beautiful and graceful. It's solidly constructed. It's fun to ride.Cons: The front wheel was packed without an axle pad, so it protruded through Schwinn's cardboard shipping box. Minor blemishes on the stem and frame. Weld quality seemed rushed and messy, with thin paint. Creaking sounds happened during hard pedaling owing to too much tension on the chain. Washers for the back wheel were bent slightly from the factory, indicating too much tightening. Sometimes getting started up gentle hills was hard, but that's the price we pay for single speed simplicity. The seat post clamp's nut stripped on day 4, but I had been adjusting it several times and was lucky to have a replacement that fit the bolt. I can imagine other buyers getting mad about such a critical part failing.Pros: Once the back wheel was eased forward slightly, the creaking sounds went away and pedaling became a pleasure. The coaster brake worked well. Having only one small part fail in 4 days of heavy testing was acceptable given the bike's price. (Shakedown testing is a part of life and perfection is unattainable. My email / digital photo warranty claim for the seat post clamp nut was accepted.) The saddle was very good. It had a valley in the center that eliminated central pressure. Everything about the bike was nice. The pedals, reflectors, chain ring, paint job, handlebars, and hand grips exceeded my modest expectations. The instruction manual was very thorough and taught me a lot about how to adjust and take care of the complicated machine. The unassembled parts were clean and well packed with foam padding and zip ties to prevent loose parts from rattling. Amazon's outer cardboard box was not punctured by the front wheel's axle. Shipping was a day ahead of schedule. The tires and wheels were fine. Very comfortable ride. Very stable at low speed. It was wonderful to travel 28 miles on wheels and not have blisters, foot pain, fatigue, and recovery time from walking.I'm very impressed with Schwinn's Typhoon. I love it. I'm going to follow the owner's manual's advice. Riding and braking with moderation, keeping everything clean, and checking everything before rides will help the bicycle last a long time. Greasing the seat post and handlebar stem helped reduce squeaks and should prevent rust. (I used spray-on white lithium grease.)If you're ready to learn about the details (and rewards) of adjusting bikes and interested in saving money, a Schwinn Typhoon is worth considering. Long term performance is another matter, so I will add notes with updates if any issues arise. I expect the owner's manual's troubleshooting section will help.I rate it 3 stars because there's room for improvement and obviously it can't compete with the quality of higher end bikes. In the whole universe of bikes on the market, it's slightly above average. It deserves 5 stars for value.- - -Update after 3.5 months and 1,841 miles: The rating changed from 3 to 4 stars. I'm very pleased with the bike. It glides along beautifully. An excellent purchase.- - -Update after 1.25 years and 7,041 miles: Due to ongoing problems with the back wheel, I am very displeased with the bike. My rating was 4 stars, now it is 2. It's a waste of money that doesn't work well. It isn't built to last.- - -Update after 500 days and 7,403 miles: Since the new back wheel is working perfectly and it was given freely under the 1 year warranty terms, I raised the rating back to 4 stars. The disappointment of losing wheel #1 has been replaced with calm satisfaction. It was good to heavily test the bike during the warranty period. It works like a dream again.- - -Update after 563 days and 7,990 miles: Lowered rating from 4 to 3 stars. The new coaster brake hummed and squeaked from the beginning. The bearing cones were tightened too much at the factory, of course. Pretty sad for it to need service after only 1,000 miles and 3 months of moderate riding. I specifically chose a single speed coaster brake bike for its reliability and simplicity. One might think 1895 technology would have been optimized by 2012, but manufacturers in China apparently decided on their own to weaken every aspect of the design. You can't ride for very long with bearing retainer rings that are insufficiently greased and made of thin, fragile metal that isn't up to the job. A job of supporting a 140 pound cyclist going less than 10 miles per hour on level ground, hardly pushing the system's limits of engineering and performance.Fortunately I had an old coaster brake from Taiwan and its bearing ring was the right size. Adding copious amounts of grease made Schwinn's coaster brake hub function smoothly and quietly for the first time. Perhaps if the people at the factory (and I know this is asking a lot) took the customer's point of view, chose good materials, and packed them fully in grease during assembly, their products would bring delight instead of bitter disappointment. If anyone purchases a Schwinn bicycle, be sure to fully disassemble every part for inspection and greasing, since the factory apparently has a policy of incompetence and indifference to quality control. Those aspects of bicycles must be considered too expensive to bother with, and they'd probably hurt sales of replacement products.I'd say a brand new Schwinn Typhoon is worth about $35. Actually, we the cyclists should be paid $1,000 to own them, since we are the company's product testers.- - -Day 579. 8,240 miles. Lowered rating to -500 stars. Coaster brake kept binding no matter how much the bearing cone was loosened and readjusted. All pedaling required far more effort than desired. Incredibly inefficient hub. Very frustrating to waste time working on it and have zero improvement. Schwinn's warranty was pointless since worthless parts were replaced with worse parts. I hate Schwinn and recommend all consumers boycott all their products. The company's goal appears to be preventing cycling. The stress of dealing with the hub 5 times on a simple morning ride was intolerable.A Schwinn Typhoon is a weak substitute for a bicycle. It shouldn't even be called a bicycle. It is badly designed and manufactured. Its materials are weak and unsuitable for the demands of low speed bicycling.It's a sad day indeed when a customer seeking simplicity and reliability receives chaos and fragility instead. Bicycles should last more than 19 months when cared for and used moderately. They're supposed to be durable goods.The Schwinn brand is over. Low quality manufacturing completely destroyed its value. I doubt the factory does any quality control. If they can't produce a dependable single speed cruiser, they're not worth dealing with. I regret wasting my money on their pathetic product.

3An affordable and fairly convenient platform to customize

Although this bike is sold as an entry-level, stand-alone product, I would not recommend using it that way. Instead, it is a good starting point for customization, due to its low price. Expect to put the money into upgrades and accessories instead. I logged about 600 miles in one month of frequent use.Out of the box, the bike is suitable only for short, fair-weather, daylight rides on paved trails, sidewalks, and secondary roads. The single-speed design and nubby balloon tires make pedaling a chore, even on level ground. The provision of only one brake -- a coaster brake, at that -- makes the stock bike dangerous. You activate a coaster brake by pedaling backward, which means that if the chain comes off, you lose the ability to brake. The pedals are cheap and slippery. The kickstand is flimsy. The bike's hardware and fasteners are not made of stainless steel, which means that they will rust if exposed to moisture. No fenders/mud guards, front or rear, are provided, and there is no provision for carrying cargo. The included Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reflectors are not sufficient for night-time riding in jurisdictions like California; a headlight is necessary, and a rear light will improve safety.After making the following upgrades, I have a perfect urban bike:1. Front caliper brake (Choose this after you choose fenders, to make sure it will fit. The Odyssey 1999 BMX worked for me, though I did have to cut the cable and housing to shorten them.)2. Smoother tires (Reassured by the nubby surface on the sides, I started with Continental TravelContact tires, 26- by 1.75-inches, Shrader valve. Then, I read something that confirmed the obvious: paved roads -- and especially ones with worn asphalt -- have plenty of texture to complement a totally smooth road tire. I have now installed Continental SportContact tires, 26 by 1.3 inches, Shrader valve. Pedaling is effortless and my average speed has risen. Tip: because these are not balloon tires, their outer circumference is too small for 26-inch tubes; I'm using 24-inch ones. Also, the wheels included with this bike have cheap rubber strips for rim tape. When you change the tires, it's worth replacing the rim tape with a stronger, cloth-based product. Remember, this thin strip of rubber or cloth is all the prevents spokes from puncturing your inner tubes!)3. Stainless steel fasteners (I buy these from the bulk aisle in my local hardware store. All of the fasteners that I've encountered so far on this bike are Metric. In addition to stainless steel, I recommend hex slots, as hex keys are small and light, and thus easy to carry in your emergency tool kit. For large fasteners like the M8 seat tube bolt, having a hex slot at one end and a nut on the other end saves you the trouble of carrying a second, same-size wrench.)4. Front and rear fenders (Planet Bike Hardcore, ATB/60 mm fenders work well. All necessary holes are available on the frame. The holes near the wheel hubs are threaded, which is super-convenient; buy short M6 screws for the stays and a short M5 screw to attach the forward base of the rear fender. It is necessary to break off the clip on the rear fender.)5. Front and rear lights (The CatEye 570, sold in both white, for the front, and red, for the back, is among the only products available that provide battery-powered active light when necessary AND can replace the passive CPSC reflectors.)6. A rear cargo rack (The Planet Bike Eco Rack works well. Most of the necessary holes are available on the frame; buy M6 screws for the threaded holes near the rear wheel hub, and use the clamps included with the rack to attach the horizontal stays.) and a rack top bag (I love my Lezyne Trunk Caddy EX!)7. A comfort saddle (I have the Schwinn Stress-Free. This is an important consideration for male cyclists.)8. Larger pedals that grip better (This bike takes half-inch pedals, of the type used on children's bikes. A good grip is especially important if you ride in street shoes.)9. A more robust kickstand (I am using a basic Greenfield, but even the short 285 mm model had to be cut with a hacksaw; inquire at your local bike shop. An M10 bolt will fit the frame's non-threaded kickstand mounting hole.)10. A bottle cage with mounting solution (This frame lacks pre-drilled bottle cage holes. The Elite VIP Universal Cage Mount, tube diameter 22 to 50 mm solves the problem.)A neat feature of the Schwinn Typhoon men's frame is that your U-lock will rest perfectly between the two curved braces that link the downtube to the top tube. No clumsy bracket is needed, and simple Velcro straps will keep the lock from jiggling while you ride. (I don't know whether the women's model has the same handy geometry, but I doubt it.) A mini U-lock, such as the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboutit Mini, 3.25 by 6 inches, fits successfully around the rear wheel, the chain stay on either side, and a vertical pole with a diameter of approximately 3 inches.

5Great bike and even better shipping

My wife and I wanted simple bikes to ride around the neighborhood with the dogs. The bikes arrived in 5 days. I was worried about possible shipping damage but to my surprise the vender had packaged the bikes into a second bike boxes in addition the the factory box making them doubly protected. Both bikes were in perfect shape when they arrived and assembly was very easy as one would expect on a single speed coaster brake bike.The bikes are simple and fun. 5 stars.
